Vintage Auto Racing Association Feeds The Need For Speed

March 21st, 2009

If you own a speed machine from days gone by and are itching to drive it as it was meant to be, the Vintage Auto Racing Association might be right up your alley. This unusual classic car club gives members an opportunity to race against others on high-speed tracks and in other organized events.

With its main headquarters in Dana Point, California, the association hosts events throughout the American west with a schedule that runs almost year round. Some of the major events on VARA’s schedule include the Route 66 Classic in March and the British Extravaganza in May.

Membership in VARA is open not only to drivers and owners, but also racing enthusiasts. The organization was created in 1973 and is now America’s largest vintage racing organization. It plays host to races for Formula cars, sport racers and sports cars.

If it’s your lifelong dream to drive, you’ll find VARA does have some pretty strict rules. It only accepts vintage cars of certain classes. Some common makes and models accepted by the organization for races including vintage Porches, Triumphs, Alfas, Fiats and Daimlers. Drivers must adhere to strict road rules, but the organization gives them a hands-on opportunity to learn. The University of VARA is a two-day training program for new racers. It provides classroom and on-track instruction to jump start this hobby.

If your dream is to open up your vintage racer and really see what it can do, VARA might be the place to start. For more information, visit the group’s Web site at www.vararacing.com.

You can enjoy classic cars whether you own one, rent one or admire those at shows and events.
