Tips You Must Follow When Buying a Classic Car
November 21st, 2009
If you have always loved cars and if you are considering taking that love to a whole other level with the purchase of a classic car, there are certain tips that you need to follow in order to make sure that you not only protect yourself, but also your investment.
When you buy a classic car, it is not as easy as just going out, pointing to the one you want and driving it home. You must carefully consider the investment you are going to make if you are pursuing this hobby and examine the overall projected investment you could put into the restoration of this car. For instance, are you planning on restoring it yourself, or are you going to enlist the help of a professional? If you take it one step further and insist on doing it yourself, how much time are you going to spend tracking down parts and pieces needed? Sometimes working with a professional who has connections to suppliers is a valuable thing. It might cost you more for his expertise, but what you make up in time savings is significant.
Next, when you purchase the care, make sure you know what you are getting into. Insist on a clear and clean transfer of title. Is the current registration in the name of the person or agent that is selling the car? If not, you could be potentially putting yourself into a risky situation, not only with the DMV, but possibly with the law as well.
Insist on knowing the full vehicle history and identify every state the car has been registered in. This can reveal a lot about what could need replacing or service. For instance, has the car been registered in a cold climate? Why should you ask this because in Northern areas it is common to put salt on the roads during winter and salt will rust and eat metal? You do not want to start on restoring this car with a projected budget, only to realize you are going to spend a lot more.
Finally, insist on a test drive and take the car out to different areas, such as highway and residential roads. See how the car holds up and try to identify potential issues based on the way it drives and handles.
