Selecting the Right Classic for Your Family
August 7th, 2009
While owning a classic car might be the dream of one person, it can quickly become a family project. Between the restoration job and the eventual showing off of the ride, it is more than likely that everyone will want to jump on the bandwagon.
To purchase a classic with an eye toward making it a family affair, it is a good idea to consider a few things when picking out the car to bring home. These factors can all come into play as to how much or how little family involvement can go along with a classic:
The size of a vehicle – Two-seaters are fun, but if the idea is to buy a classic the entire family can ride around in and even take to club meetings and shows, bigger is often better.
The condition of the car – If restoring a classic is hoped to bring a family together to work on the engine, body and finishing details, perfection is not what you seek. Look for a car that could use a little work and leverage the projects to get everyone involved. Restoring an engine, for example, can require the help of everyone. Mechanically inclined family members can help with the actual work. Everyone else can be assigned to seek out parts by making phone calls or using the Internet.
The eligibility of a car – Classic car clubs and clubs dedicated to specific makes are excellent for entire families to join. Considering the eligibility of a purchase based on available clubs in the area.
Taking an antique car and lovingly restoring it to pristine condition can prove to be a project that the whole family can get involved in. If this is the motivation behind a purchase, select the model carefully.
