Garaging a classic to protect it during inclement weather is a very good idea. This move can protect the car from exterior damage and help ensure that it will be around to run for a long time to come. The only problem with storage lies in the fact it can leave the interior smelling not so hot.
If you have pulled your classic out of storage and cannot get rid of the musty, closed up smell, there are some tricks you can use to help. When it is time to get the inside of your car smelling as good as the outside looks, try:
Giving the interior a full cleaning – Wipe down all surfaces with a good automotive cleaner for the interior. Make sure to get the carpets and upholstery, as well. Cloth can harbor odours longer and more strongly than leather or vinyl.
Using door eliminators – Products that are used to eliminate odours from inside a home can also help in vehicles. Do follow directions and test the spray on fabrics before trying to douse the whole car down. Also, make sure that the car has been fully cleaned first. The idea is to truly eliminate the smell and not just cover it up.
Dryer sheets – If the smell is just staleness in the air, putting dryer sheets with a fresh scent under the seats can help in the process. Do make sure to ride with the windows down as much as possible to help air out the interior, as well.
Professional cleaning – If nothing you are doing is getting rid of the smell, consider hiring a professional detailer.
Eliminating the musty, stale smell of storage can take a little work. With a little effort, however, you can have your classic smelling great again in no time at all.
