Getting Your Antique Ready for the Road

June 19th, 2009

With the sun out more days than not, it is the perfect time to hit the road in a classic. Getting ready to take a vehicle out of storage, however, does take a little work, especially if it has been a while since the car has been driven.

The first thing you will want to do is fire it up and make sure the engine remains in good working order. If it has been parked for a time, a little sputtering might not be out of the question at first. Once the basic mechanics are checked, there are a few other things to look at before hitting the road.

To make sure the drive goes smoothly, be certain to inspect these things:

*       Fluids – Check all the important fluids before heading out.  If the oil looks grimy after sitting for a time, it might be a good idea to change it out for a new season of driving.

*       Safety gear – Inspect the lights, turn signals and other safety equipment.

*       Tire pressure – Slow leaks can take their tool after a season of sitting. Check the pressure and make sure it is up to par.

This is the perfect time of year to pull out a classic and get some road time. Make sure the vehicle is truly ready to go before taking it out though. Months of sitting can throw some monkey wrenches into the works.

Share your pride and joy with the world! Take your classic car for a drive or enter it in a show. But first be sure your license and car insurance are in order.
