How To Baby the Classic Engine
June 12th, 2009
The engine in your classic has a lot of miles on it, but you are not quite ready to rebuild or replace it. As long as it is running soundly right now, there are some things you can do to help yourself get a few more trips out of your machine and perhaps even more than that.
To keep your engine running as smoothly as possible, make sure to do these things:
- Keep up with routine maintenance – As a classic owner you probably already do this, but there are times everyone forgets to go in for an oil change or a tune up. If you have trouble remembering when you are due, create a log book and put important dates for service on a calendar.
- Drive with care – Little things you do behind the wheel can go a long way in preserving engine life. To get the most out of yours, be sure to accelerate slowly, take excess weight out of your vehicle, avoid over-revving and do not drive with your foot on the brake or clutch.
- Consider using hauling services or a trailer – If you take your classic on the road to shows, consider getting a trailer or even using a professional service for the long-distance transportation. These moves can get your car where it needs to go without putting wear and tear on the engine.
Keeping a classic engine running well a little bit longer is not out of the question. A few simple measures can help you get more life out of your car.
