Why Buy A Classic Car?

June 7th, 2009

There are few things that are more likely to get a judgmental reaction from another human being than telling them that you enjoy classic cars. There are some people with the effrontery to claim that collectibles such as classic cars are something for young kids, as though the enjoyment that comes from owning something special is something that reduces with age. Sure, sometimes collecting classic cars might not be practical, but that is why it is something that you do in your spare time. A lot of things are not practical, but people still do them. Why the skepticism about classic cars?

The truth of the matter is that classic cars are a joy in themselves. They do not come cheap, generally, but they have a charm and a sense of style that is less prevalent in this more functional age. The work involved in restoring an old car can be time consuming and laborious, but it is also rather relaxing and even a little bit therapeutic. Having a project to work on is something that keeps the brain well oiled and ready to deal with the more mundane tasks – and having something in the garage that will be the envy of the neighbors doesn’t hurt either.
