Check The Paper Trail On An Antique Car
May 9th, 2009
You would not be likely to buy a new car without being able to put your hands on the important documentation papers. So, why would you consider buying a classic without the same level of scrutiny? It just does not make sense.
When you purchase an antique car, it is important to make sure everything is in order. While there are circumstances where paperwork related to the title just might not be available, in most cases it will be.
To cover your bases and make certain you are buying a car the “owner” can truly sell, ask to look at such things as:
- The title paperwork – Check the title against the actual vehicle identification number on the car. If there are alterations or things do not match up, be wary. If the title paperwork is not available, check with the state department of motor vehicles for assistance.
- The car history – Serious antique car owners keep meticulous records. Ask to see such things as pictures of restoration work in progress, service reports, maintenance schedules and so on. This can help you tell how well taken care of the vehicle happens to be. If these things are unavailable, do make sure to have a good mechanic look things over for you.
The paper trail on a classic can tell you a lot about a vehicle before you make a buy. If one is not available, take precautions to make sure the car you are looking at is all it is cracked up to be.
