While it is always better to pay cash outright whenever possible, sometimes a deal that is too good to pass up on is out of reach.

So, what can you do if you have a dream car in mind, but lack the funding to buy it? There are financing companies that are accustomed to working with antique car buyers. They can often be found online. It is also possible to speak directly with your own personal bank. Sometimes personal banks or credit unions are more than willing to finance classic purchases when a few conditions are met.

To get the best possible deal on financing and increase the chances of approval, it is very smart to make sure:

• An appraisal is in place – Most financing companies will insist on knowing exactly what a classic is worth before agreeing to close. Even if you don’t need to obtain financing, getting an appraisal is still a wise idea.
• A down payment is in place – While this might not always be necessary, it is often best to have at least some money down. It doesn’t hurt to have equity in the purchase from the start. Plus, this can make you look more attractive and responsible to financing agents.
• Credit is decent – Most companies that finance classic car purchases do prefer to work with people who have decent, if not impeccable, credit. If your personal credit happens to be questionable, consider working to improve it before seeking financing. If this just is not feasible because a great deal might pass you by, consider increasing your down payment amount.
